AWXEL (They/Them/Theirs) is a non-binary, transdisciplinary Latinx artist exploring themes of family ancestry, the Latinx diaspora, ceremonial aesthetics, knowledge decentralization, and queerness. Their work spans various mediums, including bronze and iron metal casting, tapestry weaving, writing, bookbinding, ceramics, and performance art. “PUTA MESTIZA MARICA: Que Mierda Haz Hecho’’ is the culmination of AWXEL’s work over the past 3 years. Through their creations, AWXEL navigates existential grief, utilizing art as a medium for processing. Masks in their work symbolize the internalized homophobia within Latinx households, while also recognizing and reclaiming the fetishization of their identity.
Artist Statement:
The title insinuates that I have done something I shouldn’t have done—that I am something I shouldn’t be. The point is to be loud and to take up space, especially during these times when it’s crucial to show that there’s more than one way of being trans, more than one way of being Latinx, of being vulnerable and strong, sexy and vile.
Simultaneously, the title references the multiplicity of my being, carrying the derogatory value of the words, and directing them towards the image of my inner child. It encapsulates the essence of who I was, embodying the terms that sought to define me.
This show centers on the way Queer/Trans Latinx individuals like myself exist and process the landscape, while striving to fabricate new tools for coping and processing. The goal is to celebrate oneself on one’s own terms.
